Massachusetts Deer Hunts For Paraplegic Sportsmen

The dates of the hunt are variable from year to year, but are usually the Thursday, Friday and Saturday prior to the first Monday in November.

The hunt is usually held in two locations: North Berkshires and South Berkshires. The hunter must hunt in one of these locations and must hunt under the direction of the hunt leader for that location.

The hunter may take an escort with him, but only the hunter may hunt. The escort may assist in retrieving downed game. Division personnel and volunteers are also on hand to assist.

Hunters participating on the hunt may take a deer of either sex and may use a shotgun or bow and arrow. Foul weather gear, warm clothing and boots are a must. Hunters are responsible for making their own arrangements for lodging and food. Division personnel and volunteers will, however, provide vehicles to place hunters in the field from each hunt headquarters.

Further, a paraplegic hunter is allowed to discharge a firearm from a vehicle, provided that the vehicle is not in motion and that the vehicle is not within 150 feet of a state or hard surfaced road, or within 500 feet of a dwelling in use.
